EG6-10: 5 Music Vids

ACT: Lana Del Rey
TRACK: Blue Jeans
YEAR:  April 2012
DIRECTOR: Yoann Lemoine
GENRE: Surf Rock
MAIN AUDIENCE: F 15-24
Music Video:

Points:
. This music video uses long takes instead of fast paced however it still uses the long takes to good effect because it's a slow song so it doesn't sound unusual.
Over-the-shoulder shot
Extreme long shot
Extreme close-up
. And even though it uses long takes there's still a variety of shot types being used which contribute to the verisimilitude, for example; high angle, low angle, over the shoulder, close-up, long shot, extreme close up. And it does all these in a short space of time.

. There's also a black and white tint used all throughout the video which gives it this old vintage look it also contributes to the mysterious feel to the video.

Reflection effect.
.The video opens with water in the first shot and has a ripply effect which could signify lots of things leaving it ambiguous for the audience, it uses it to good effect when the singer's face is reflected on the ripples

.And the relationship between the lyrics and visuals are very clear because we can tell it's a love story with the couple being together, and also the singer lip syncs throughout.

ACT: Fun
TRACK: We are young
YEAR:  September 2011
DIRECTOR:  Marc Klasfeld
GENRE: Indie Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: F/M 15-24

medium close-up
Points:
. The lead singer is directing the lyrics to the audience as if he's telling the story by lip syncing and looking towards the camera, the medium close-up on his face works well to show the lip syncing and his emotions towards the lyrics.
medium long-shot

. Also the performance from the band is shown throughout this video which is commonly used with bands in this genre, and their instruments are all revealed instead of just choosing to do a fixed narrative video.

Dark lighting
. The lighting is this video is also used to good effect because it's a dull emotional song the lighting is dimmed in the scene instead of being bright, this way it cannotes the emotions that should be felt.

.Mostly all of the video is in slow motion which works well with the song as it's a slow song so the visuals fit in time with the beat.

Indie costumes
. The band member's costumes also fit in with the genre as it's very indie with them being in suits and trainers so the mise-en-scene here has worked well.

ACT: Bon Jovi
TRACK: Livin On A Prayer
YEAR:  1986
DIRECTOR:
GENRE: Glam Metal
MAIN AUDIENCE: M 24-34
Music Video:

Points:

Medium Close-up
. The heavy metal genre is anchored within the mise-en-scene as the band members shown in the music video are wearing leather jackets and have long hair which is common for heavy metal bands.

. This video also uses a common convention where the music video shows the band members goofing around, it does this so that the audience feel like they get to know the personalities of the band members and feel like they have a direct connection.
Low Angle

.They also use star treatment for the lead singer when he's singing and they use low angles shots to show his authority within the band

Long Shot

.
. And the video shows performance footage which is common for music videos by showing the band with their instruments and the singer with his microphone.
. Also they use good shot vairation to help achieve verisimilitude well instead of doing long takes.

ACT: Blue
TRACK: One Love
YEAR:  2002
DIRECTOR:
GENRE: Pop, R&B
MAIN AUDIENCE: M/F 24-34
Music Video:

Points:
Establishing shot
. In this video they use a green screen to prove the locations as it's an easy method to vary the locations without actually using these locations, instead it's done with special effects and it also helps the transitions work well in this video.
. Also the genre is urban pop and the locations signify this by using gritty urban alleys which also give it this rural feel.
Long shot
. And whenever there's a singer in shot the singer is always looking directly at the camera which is common in music videos especially bands, this way it helps to connect with the audience more directly.

High angle shot
. They also apply the male gaze theory with some of the band members as they're wearing revealing clothing to appeal more to the female genre.

. And with the shot variety that they use they also use high angle shots for when the singer is lip syncing directly to the camera to make them look powerful and in control.

ACT: Eminem
TRACK: Love The Way You Lie
YEAR:  2010
DIRECTOR: Joseph Kahn
GENRE: Hip Hop, Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: M 24-34
Music Video:

Close up
Points:
. There's a strong narrative in this video with a strong link between thew visuals and lyrics in this sense as the narrative is about a couple and domestic abuse, and there;s verses such as "love the way you lie" which link with this subject.
. The video also had performance footage for when the lead singers are directly looking into the camera.
Establishing shot
.There's a wide range of shot variety used using different locations which is vital to keep the video interesting and the audience interested.

. And with the fast beat of the song there's fast paced editing used for the action scenes , for example when the couple are fighting there's good use of continuity editing being applied and helps add to the verisimilitude.
. The mise-en-scene also works well as it's a rural image being portrayed within the visuals and the setting and clothes all signify this.
